Daily Look New Year’s Eve Style Challenge!

I am back with another style post and I hope you’ll like it! New years eve is coming up quick and every year I go through the same few questions, where am I going, what are we doing, and most important, what am I going to wear?!

This year I got a head start on what to wear because last week someone from reached out to me and asked me to participate in their New Year’s Eve Style Challenge! I was asked to find my favorite little black dress from and use that as my inspiration for a New Years Eve look! They have a ton of LBD’s and I quickly found a few favorites! I eventually decided to go for the Dakota Dalrie Vegan Leather Dress! So in other words, my LBD is actually a Little black vegan leather dress. I love anything sparkling for New Years Eve, but this past year I have been connecting more with my edgy side when it comes to styling. And by that I mean in the sense that I now wear vegan leather and the occasional distressed denim! I love how this dress is so simple, yet sophisticated, edgy and it can be styled in so many ways. I could wear it like this for new years, and then wear it with a long gray cozy cardigan, cool tights, booties and a cute scarf for work.

What do you think? I wanted to do New Years Eve a little different that than just the regular dress and heels this year so I decided to pair it with sequin oxfords from Kate Spade. Because who doesn’t like sequins? And oxfords are always a good idea! I added some subtle pops of color with the green jacket from and my favorite tear drop bracelets from Margaret Elizabeth. I am getting really into statement earrings these days and loved these from! They also have that little edge to them. Who knows, maybe by next year I’ll be a rocking biker babe? Probably not, but I digress. With a simple dress and it being New Years and all, I figured I could really amp up the makeup!

Norwegian Recipes: Lussekatter!

I am back with another Norwegian recipe! Yesterday was St. Lucia day so I decided to make some Lussekatter, also known as Saffron buns or St. Lucia buns. Wait let’s rephrase that. I tried to make Lussekatter. To be honest I never really knew the story of St. Lucia day, but after some googling I found some information that seems accurate and according to my memories.

” Saint Lucia Day is on 13 December, in Advent. Her feast once coincided with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year before calendar reforms, so her feast day has become a festival of light. In Scandinavia, where Lucy is called Lucia, she is represented by a person dressed in a white dress and red sash with a crown or wreath of candles on her head. In both Norway and Sweden, girls (or sometimes boys) dressed as Lucy carry rolls and cookies in procession as songs are sung. It is said that to vividly celebrate St. Lucy’s Day will help one live the long winter days with enough light.”  –Wikipedia” 

I am adding in a picture so you can see that its kind of cute, but cartoon style because I don’t want to be a creeper and add a picture of someone else’s child on my blog.  If you do a google search for St.Lucia day, you can see real life images :)

st.lucia day: lussekatterTo me, St. Lucia brings back memories of my kindergarden days where we would dress up in white, wear the headband, bake Lussekatter/Saffron buns and parade through the kindergarden singing songs. Writing this out, I agree it sounds weird and maybe even a little bonkers, but it was fun and the buns are amazing!

On to the recipe. I found it on “Matglede“, which is a free Norwegian recipe app made by Tine, one of the larger dairy brands in Norway (I checked and its available in the us iTunes as well). Its usually really good and they have some great recipes in there. The only problem this time around was that the instructions were a little off. One little detail was not right and because its been a year since I made saffron buns last, I followed the recipe and it got messed up! So here is what I did and what you should do instead!

Start by pulling out all your tools and ingredients! You’ll need:

1 1/3 stick/150 grams of butter

2 1/4 cup/5 dl Milk

2 small packets (of the 3 pack) /50 gram yeast

1 g saffron

2/3 cup/150 grams of sugar

0.5 tsp salt

4 1/2-5 cups/13 dl flour

1 egg, plus one for brushing

1. Stir together all the dry ingredients, except the saffron. Here is where I got tricked partly by the recipe and party by the fact that I was multitasking while baking. Not always a good idea.

2. Melt butter, add milk, saffron and bring it to about 99 degrees fahrenheit (37 celcius)

3. Combine all the ingredients and let it sit in a room temperature area for 30-40 min. Make sure you don’t have any cold draft coming from a window or similar. Yeast likes it warm. This is where your dough should look like a pretty yellow sun color and my dough still has saffron flakes all over…uh.

4. Take out the dough, add some flour to a working surface and start kneading it. Cut it into pieces depending on how large you want your buns to come out. Remember they will double in size from what you make at this stage. St. Lucia Day: Lussekatter!

5. Roll the strings into 8’s and add raisins. These should be yellow by now…St. Lucia Day: Lussekatter!

6. Stir together one egg in a small bowl and brush the buns lightly on top.

7. Cover them with a kitchen towel and let them sit for 30-40 min. The longer they sit, the more the yeast rises. If you use rapid yeast 20-30 might be enough. I usually just go do something else during the wait times. Like clean up my mess! St. Lucia Day: Lussekatter!

8. Preheat the oven to 450 Fahrenheit or 225 Celsius and bake for 5-8 min depending on how big they are.

Thanksgiving Traditions and Weekend Recap!

I love Holidays and especially Thanksgiving! Being from Norway and Thanksgiving being an American holiday, I have only celebrated it for the last few years, but I already love it. I know it has a lot of history and there is a lot more to it than a nice family dinner, but to me, it’s all about appreciation, friends, family and giving thanks. I also love how it pushes Christmas back to actually being in December. My friends back home complain about Christmas decorations and food coming into stores in September. That’s way to early! Summer is not even fully over yet. But, I digress.

We decided not to go anywhere this year and just stayed in San Francisco. To be honest, I kind of like it when the city simmers down and everybody just takes a breather. A couple of years ago, I ordered the turkey from Honeybaked Ham and cooked a complete Thanksgiving meal at home with every side dish you can ever imagine. I don’t know if I forgot that it was just the two of us or what, but we had turkey, stuffing, mac & cheese, gravy, cornbread and mashed potatoes for weeks! It was nice, but until we’re a big family I kind of feel like I have been there, done that! So this year, we decided to just relax and go out for a nice dinner instead. I loved it!

Thanksgiving dinner dateOn my way home from work the day before Thanksgiving, I stopped by Banana Republic and that combined with the rain we have been having lately, it really got me into PJ’s all day lounge around mood! I wanted all the leggings, tanks, cashmere cardigans, cozy socks and infinity scarfs! And its already added to my wish list.

I got the recipe from Joy the Baker. Whenever I visit her site, my mouth waters and I want to bake all things everything! The result of the pie? Ta-da!

Thanksgiving Apple PieI also needed to get all my Christmas shopping done so the gifts would make it to Norway in time for Christmas. After putting it off for too long, I knew it was time, but to be honest, Black Friday scares me. Last year we went to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving and I figured I would visit one of the outlet malls for Black Friday. Worst idea ever! After being stuck at the parking lot for about an hour, trying to park further away and realizing I was in the deep ghetto, combined with the fear of accidentally becoming the center of attention in one of those Black Friday news headlines, I drove off.

So this year, I took a different approach and got almost everything online with either pick up in store or 2 day free shipping! Amazing! After lounging around in my PJ’s watching movies, and eating apple pie all day long, I did a quick pickup in store at a few places and finished off the night by watching the annual Christmas tree lighting at Union Square. Another holiday tradition favorite! Didn’t get a good picture of the tree at the event with all those people, so here one from yesterday, in all its glory!

And even though we didn’t have a traditional Thanksgiving meal, we made a fake smaller one with chicken on Sunday! The sides are what really matters right? :)

DIY Exfoliating Face Mask!

Lately my skin has been in desperate need of some extra attention. I don’t know if its because of the weather, the way I am eating (Apple pie anyone?), or just coincidences, but it needed something. My skin is pretty sensitive so I try to keep my skincare as natural as possible. I am also terrified of all the hidden chemicals in skincare and makeup! Had you ever heard about parabens before they became a no-no? Me neither. I bet there are more no-no’s in there somewhere, we just don’t know about them yet. Sound crazy? Well, I just think there has to be another way, and here it is!

After Pinteresting for a while, wait, is that a verb yet? Anyways, after perusing Pinterest for natural homemade facial masks, I learned that apparently Cinnamon is the best natural pore extractor/cleanser. Who knew? I then found this simple DIY facial mask that consists of Honey and Cinnamon. Yepp, that’s it! Honey for moisture and Cinnamon for pore exfoliating. I have been using it twice a week for a good month now, and I can really tell a difference. Unfortunately I didn’t do any before after shots, but I did make a 1-2-3 guide on how you can make your own!

3. Put it on your face, leave your eyes alone and play on your phone for about 15 minutes. Cleanse off and do a couple of circular movements around your own pore clusters (chin, nose, forehead). Dry off and put on a gentle calming moisturizer. I love this one from Trader Joe’s! It’s simple, has SPF, affordable and my esthetician approved it :) Win!DIY Exfoliating Cinnamon Facemask
